hot title:Summary for times practice

SUMMARY
POINTS (15 MARKS - 1 MARK PER POINT)

1. Destruction by insects/insect pests.

2. Pesticides give the gardeners the upper hand over insects.
(human gardener – the advantage)

3a. Organic production of food limited – cannot provide food for a large city.
(How do you feed a metropolis like New York on farms/backyard plots?)

3b. Large cities can’t be fed using organically grown food / needs usage of pesticides.

4. Pesticides today are improved

5. and pose no (immediate) danger to people.(harmless to humans)

6. Eating sprayed fruit may reduce the onset of cancer.
(“pesticide-ridden” foods eaten may decrease the incidence of cancer)

7 Studies conclude eating normal produce poses no distant threat either.
(no long-term health risk) This is different to point 6

8. Research shows that pesticides are within recognized standards
(well below safe levels of exposure for humans)

9. Regulatory agencies have proven pesticide safety linked to animal experiments.
( F.D.A./E.P.A. safety standards – overexposed lab. animals have no adverse effects)

10 .Even if fruit is outside safety standards, it is still not a problem to humans.. (if one apple got through the system, with marginally higher pesticide level- no danger)

11 Also, natural stone fruits contain small, non-harmful amounts of poisons/cyanide.
(seeds contain miniscule amounts of cyanide – a toxic chemical)

12 These are not prohibited – nor should they be.
(should they be banned) Implication is that they should not.

13. Eating some other foods pose a greater threat to life than pesticide-sprayed produce.
(more people have died accidentally choking on grapes than….)

14. Some media elements actively work to prevent public agreement to pesticides.
(acceptance of pesticides difficult due to mass media campaigns)

15 They use provocative, emotional reporting to gain public support against pesticides
OR media is unreliable (sensationalist reporting to inflame people’s feelings)

16. They don’t back up their anti-pesticide claims with scientific proof.
.(do not support their conclusions with sound scientific evidence.) 15 MARKS
